A research held at McMaster University in 2016 states otherwise. As per this study, running on a diet which has low sodium content could be dangerous to your health.
The McMaster Research and Its Revelations about Sodium
The Population Health Research Institute of the said University collected data from around 49 countries. The data belonged to more than 130,000 people.
The analysis was firmly bent on discovering and establishing a connection between the sodium intake levels of the people and the mortality rates in the group. They also studied about the cardiac events in the data(people getting strokes, heart attacks, and other cardiovascular conditions) and tried to link it to the amount of sodium each person was taking with their regular meals.
The obvious initial conclusion they landed on was that a high sodium intake level invites cardiovascular incidents. However, the second conclusion was regarding the effects of low sodium intake.
As per the researchers, the rate of heart attacks, strokes, and mortality was higher in people who were on a low sodium food regime than in those who were on an average sodium diet.

Except for the fact that you need to follow the exact sodium levels in your meals as suggested by your doctors, this study doesn’t affect your diet much. However, if you are skipping the official medical advice and trying to cut back on sodium without any restrictions, the consequences could be disastrous for you as well.
One thing that the said study establishes is that a diet which contains tiny amounts of sodium can cause lasting harm to your body. It is sufficiently more hazardous than an average sodium intake.
Moderate Your Sodium Grammes
On an average, people consume somewhere between 3.5 to 4.5 grammes of sodium in one day. If this amount goes below 3 grammes, your diet is considered to have low sodium. Introducing more than 6 grammes of sodium to your system every day is considered being on a high sodium diet.
The liquid portion of your blood is maintained because of the capability of sodium to attract water and hold it. It maintains the electrolyte and water balance in your body cells. Sodium also plays crucial roles in the maintenance of the muscle and nerve function in your body.
Now, your body needs sodium, and it requires the same to be in a completely balanced amount. Since your body depends on sodium for water retention, it is paramount that it gets enough sodium per requirement but not too much or too less. If you go too far on either side of the average number, the chances of cardiovascular incidents will only increase, says the study.
